Red Lobster publishes prices. The confusion is structural, and anyone can reproduce it in three clicks.
Open redlobster.com/menu and fifteen category names appear. Open one of them – Signature Feasts, say – and seven dish names appear under a supply-disruption notice, with no figures anywhere. Click through to a dish, though, and the page prints its name, its price and its calorie count in plain text, along with the line that qualifies all of it: select a location near you to see local pricing. The Ultimate Feast reads $43.99 and 1280 calories; Walt's Favorite Shrimp, $16.99 and 520. Across the 120 items in the chain's own menu sitemap, 119 carry a price the company printed itself.
That changes what a third-party price list is. It becomes a claim that can be marked. Of 155 such claims checked, 108 match to the cent; the other 47 fail in patterns. Both lists checked run 50 cents low on Cheddar Bay Biscuits at each size. Both put Live Maine Lobster $4.00 above the $30.99 on its page. Both print $6.99 for Snow Crab Legs against $15.99, which is one figure copied twice rather than two separate mistakes. Figures from the bankruptcy years still circulate too – an $11 million quarterly loss, a $76 million sales drop – but neither prices a dish.
Calories make the cheapest test. They do not move with the market, so a list showing the right price and the wrong calorie count was not read off the company's page. Eight items do precisely that.
Then there is the gap. Ultimate Endless Shrimp is running now, and has no page, no sitemap entry and no price on redlobster.com. A chain that publishes 119 prices publishes none for its headline promotion.
