Checking a Lowe's gift card balance uses one of three routes Lowe's publishes: online through lowes.com, by phone on 1-800-560-7172, and at the customer service desk in any store. The online form wants the card number and the PIN under the metallic strip. Enter the card number and the PIN
The number is on the back, the PIN under a scratch panel; on an e-gift card both sit in the confirmation email. Neither length is published, which is why guides disagree.
If the PIN is unreadable, go to the desk
The customer service desk at any Lowe's reads a balance without the PIN, so a ruined scratch panel is an inconvenience, not a loss. A PIN already exposed at purchase is fraud instead.
Read an Invalid error twice before assuming fraud
An Invalid error code means one of two unrelated things and never says which: somebody copied the numbers and drained it, or it hit $0 and sat 90 days until the number died.

Of the four here, only Lowe's checker sits on a domain that does not carry the retailer's name.
Target's trap is two products under one name; Amazon's is that no balance page exists. Lowe's runs both ways — a second company called Lowes, and a real checker on a third-party domain.
The qualifier everyone drops: cards that have a balance
Ask whether Lowe's gift cards expire and every guide answers identically: they do not expire, and carry no dormancy or inactivity fees. Flat, confident, unqualified.
Lowe's own wording is not unqualified. It says gift cards that have a balance will never expire and are never subject to additional fees. The conditional clause is doing real work, and no guide reproduces it.
The other half sits on a different Lowe's page, the one about checking a balance. There, Lowe's states that a card left at a $0 balance for 90 days is deactivated and an Invalid error code appears. Both halves are true: the money never expires, and the empty container is thrown away after three months.
That is legally coherent. The federal CARD Act sets a five-year floor on funds expiring on a store gift card, and states go further — California bars expiry on most gift certificates. None of it is engaged by retiring a card holding nothing.
It matters for one reason. An Invalid error code is also what a drained card returns, and draining is not hypothetical: prosecutors announced arrests in March 2025 over a scheme involving fraudulently obtained Home Depot and Lowe's cards, put at $20 million after a 15-month investigation. The same three words mean either theft at the rack or your spent-out card being tidied away. The web form will not say which. The desk can.
Store operations run from Mooresville, North Carolina, and Lowe's Companies, Inc. does not franchise them, so this is uniform chain-wide.
