- HelpMeLogin operates no balance checker and never will. Nothing here can extend, reactivate, look up or refund a card.
- An empty card is not a spare card. Ninety days at zero ends the number permanently, so a card kept in a van for a future refund is a card that will fail at the counter.
- An Invalid error code carries two meanings and announces neither. Theft and routine deactivation return the same message, and only the service desk can separate them.
- Nobody legitimate is ever paid in gift cards. Since nothing expires while money is on the card, a caller inventing a deadline is running a script. Report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Do Lowe's gift cards expire? Not while they hold money: the published wording is that gift cards that have a balance will never expire and are never subject to additional fees. Both halves of that sentence are conditional, and the condition matters. A card left at a $0 balance for 90 days is deactivated for security, its number stops working, and it can never be reloaded or reused afterwards.

What you need
8 itemsHow it works
Read the conditional clause rather than the headline
Gift cards that have a balance will never expire and are never subject to additional fees. Those first four words carry the whole rule, and almost every summary drops them.
Spend a card down and then let it go
Once a card reaches zero, the ninety-day clock starts. Keeping the plastic for a future refund only works inside that window, after which the number is dead.
Treat an Invalid error code as a question, not an answer
It appears for a card drained by somebody else and for a card retired after three empty months. The web form cannot tell those apart, so take the card and receipt to a desk.
Know the floor beneath the promise
Funds behind a store gift card must stay valid for at least five years from issue or from the last load. Retailers may promise more, and this one promises no expiry at all while money remains.
Read a balance drop as theft rather than decay
No dormancy, inactivity, or service fee erodes these cards. A balance lower than expected has been spent, which is a fraud report rather than a billing query.
If something goes wrong
An old card now returns Invalid
- Cause
- Either it was drained, or it hit $0 and aged out after 90 days
- Fix
- The message cannot say which. Spent it months ago? Routine. Never spent from it at all? Report fraud at the store.
I kept an empty card for a future refund
- Cause
- Deactivation follows 90 days at zero
- Fix
- Beyond that window the number is dead and cannot take a refund. A store credit has to go somewhere else.
My balance fell while the card sat unused
- Cause
- No fee erodes a card holding money
- Fix
- Treat the drop as gift card draining. Check the figure on 1-800-560-7172, then report it with the card and the sales receipt.
There is an expiry date printed on the card
- Cause
- The plastic and the funds are separate things in law
- Fix
- Federal rules require a card to disclose whether the money behind it expires. Ask at the service desk before discarding anything.
I want the last few dollars in cash
- Cause
- Cash redemption is a state-law right rather than a national one
- Fix
- These cards are not redeemable for cash except where the law requires it, and states set their own thresholds.
Somebody said my card expires this week
- Cause
- A pressure script, and a common one
- Fix
- A card holding a balance does not expire, so the deadline itself is the fraud. Report the approach at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
What’s fixed, and what actually varies
Company-owned stores mean the same rules in every aisle. The variation is between a card that still holds money and a card that does not.
Fixed
- Cards that have a balance never expire
- Cards that have a balance carry no additional fees
- 90 days at $0 deactivates the card for security
- A deactivated card cannot be reloaded or reused
- Regulation E requires at least five years on the underlying funds
Varies
- Whether a card still holds a balance, which decides everything else
- Whether an Invalid error code means theft or deactivation
- How long ago a card was spent down to zero
- Whether a state forces a cash payout below a threshold
- The threshold at which any such payout applies, which each state sets alone
Call 1-800-560-7172 or use the checker reached by typing lowes.com. A figure above zero means the no-expiry promise applies in full. A zero starts a clock nobody announces.
How Lowe's compares
Four retailers, one federal floor, and four different promises stacked on top of it.
| Chain | Does the value expire | Fees published | The catch worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowe's | Not while it holds a balance | None | 90 days at $0 kills the number |
| Walmart | No, per the terms | None named | Cash-out forced in only 14 jurisdictions |
| Target | No, and no loss of value | None on a GiftCard | The prepaid card beside it starts at $4 |
| Kroger | Funds do not expire | None on its own card | A Visa card sold there charges $4.95 a month |
Terms are reissued without notice. Read the retailer's current wording before relying on a promise here.
Each of these promises beats the federal floor, and each hides its catch somewhere else. This one hides it in an adjective, since only a card that has a balance is covered.
Four words doing all the work
Every summary of this policy says the cards do not expire and carry no fees. The published sentence is narrower, and the difference is not academic.
Gift cards that have a balance will never expire and are never subject to additional fees. Read on 26 August 2026, that is the whole promise, and the opening clause is conditional. A card holding money is protected against both expiry and fees. A card holding nothing is not protected against anything.
The other half lives on the balance page. A card left at a $0 balance for 90 days is deactivated by the system for security, its number stops working, and it cannot be reloaded or reused. Both halves are true at once: the money never expires, and the empty container is retired after three months. Anyone keeping a spent card in a glovebox for a future return should know the window.
That retirement is legally uncontroversial. Gift card provisions of the Credit CARD Act of 2009, written into Regulation E at section 1005.20 and published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, protect the funds rather than the plastic. Funds must stay valid at least five years from issue or from the last load, and a dormancy, inactivity, or service fee is lawful only after a full year of no activity, once a calendar month at most, and only where the card discloses it. Retiring a card that holds nothing engages none of that. Several states go further than the federal minimum and differ from one another, so no single state rule stands in for the rest.
One consequence is practical rather than legal. A deactivated card returns an Invalid error code, and so does a card somebody else has emptied. The checker run by Stored Value Solutions cannot separate them, which is why Lowe's Companies, Inc. of Mooresville, North Carolina keeps a service desk in every store.
Questions people ask
Do Lowe's gift cards expire?
Not while they hold a balance. The published wording protects cards that have money on them, and only those.
What happens to an empty card?
After 90 days at $0 it is deactivated for security. The number then cannot be reloaded or reused.
Are there dormancy or inactivity fees?
None. Cards holding a balance are never subject to additional fees, and federal rules would allow one only after a full year of inactivity.
Why does the checker say Invalid?
Two unrelated causes share that message: a drained card, or a card deactivated after three empty months. The service desk can tell them apart.
What does federal law guarantee?
Five years of validity on the funds behind a store gift card, from issue or from the last load. Any retailer may promise more, and this one does.
Can I get a small balance in cash?
Not except where a state law requires it, and those states set their own thresholds.
Does the same rule cover an e-gift card?
The same conditional wording applies. A balance keeps the card alive, and an e-gift card cannot be reloaded once it empties either.
