Amazon Gift Card Lost or Stolen — Not Responsible

If a caller already has the claim code
  • HelpMeLogin operates no balance checker and never will. Nothing here can cancel, reissue, trace or refund a card, and any site offering that is collecting codes.
  • Treat the money as gone, then act anyway. A claim code is bearer value with no chargeback behind it, though the FTC says to report to the company right away because some issuers freeze funds a scammer has not yet spent.
  • Speed is the whole game. In an alert dated 21 August 2023 the FTC put it flatly: the faster you contact the gift card company, the better the chance of getting money back.
  • Nobody offering to recover your funds for a fee is real. Reporting costs nothing at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and a recovery offer is a second fraud aimed at the same person.

On an Amazon gift card lost or stolen, the printed terms leave no room to argue: Amazon is not responsible if a card is lost, stolen, destroyed or used without permission. No receipt route and no replacement line appear beside that sentence. Once a claim code has been read out to somebody, whoever redeems it first keeps the money, and the Federal Trade Commission publishes 1-888-280-4331 as the number to report it on.

The FTC's own page on reporting a gift card scam Where 1-888-280-4331 is published alongside the reporting routes for other brands. HelpMeLogin is not affiliated with Amazon or with any government body, and recovers nothing.

How it works

  1. Open the activity log before assuming theft

The Gift Card Activity log lists every code claimed and every order that drew on the balance. Plenty of vanished balances turn out to be a balance applied automatically to a recent order.

  2. Call 1-888-280-4331 the same day

That number appears on the Federal Trade Commission's own gift card page as the reporting route for this brand. Nothing is gained by waiting, and an unspent balance can sometimes be frozen.

  3. Report it even if the loss is old

The agency is explicit that a scam should be reported however long ago it happened. Reports feed the case data that shapes enforcement, whatever happens to one person's money.

  4. File at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and use the company's own channel

People outside a customer account can write to reportascam@amazon.com. Customers have a self-service reporting tool inside the account itself.

  5. Refuse every offer of recovery for a fee

Recovery scams follow gift card scams within days, using details of the first fraud as proof of legitimacy. No genuine report ever costs money.

If something goes wrong

My balance dropped and I did not spend it

Cause
Balances apply automatically to eligible orders
Fix
Open the Gift Card Activity log, which lists every order that drew on the balance. Most reports of a vanished balance end here.

Someone else redeemed my claim code

Cause
A code is bearer value and identifies nobody
Fix
Call 1-888-280-4331 today, then file at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Speed decides whether an unspent balance can still be frozen.

The card is physically lost

Cause
The printed terms disclaim responsibility for it
Fix
Where you bought the code yourself, it may still sit in your order details. No other route is published for a lost card.

A caller said my account had a security problem

Cause
Impersonation, and the most common script of all
Fix
End the call. The company states it will never ask anyone to purchase a gift card, and no genuine transaction requires paying with one.

Somebody offered to get the money back for a fee

Cause
A recovery scam, targeting people already defrauded
Fix
Refuse it and report the approach. Reporting is free, and nothing legitimate charges to reverse a gift card.

What’s fixed, and what actually varies

One issuer, one printed clause, and no franchise network to soften it. What varies is how quickly a report is made and whether anything is left to freeze.

Fixed

  • The printed terms disclaim responsibility for a lost, stolen or misused card
  • A claim code is bearer value with no chargeback behind it
  • The FTC publishes 1-888-280-4331 for reporting this brand
  • The company states it will never ask anyone to buy a gift card
  • Cards are issued by ACI Gift Cards, Inc., a Washington corporation

Varies

  • Whether the code was redeemed by somebody else already
  • Whether any balance remains for an issuer to freeze
  • Whether the loss is a missing card or a code read aloud
  • How long the case takes when the printed code is damaged
  • What customer service can do beyond the written policy

Open the activity log first. A code claimed by another account is theft. A balance applied to your own recent order is not, and the log settles which before anybody dials.

How Amazon compares

Four retailers, four published answers to the worst question a gift card raises.

ChainPublished replacement policyWhat it turns onWhere to report the fraud
AmazonNot responsible, in the printed termsNothing, since no route exists1-888-280-4331, then the FTC
TargetReissue by phone, lost or damagedThe original receipt1-800-544-2943, then the FTC
WalmartNo on one page, reissue on anotherThe original receipt1-888-537-5503, then the FTC
KrogerNone — the value is stated as lostNothing, since no route existsThe issuing brand, then the FTC

Policies are reissued without notice. Read the current wording on the card before relying on a line here.

Two of these four hang a replacement on a receipt. The Amazon position is different in kind, because a claim code identifies nobody, so there is no owner for a reissue to restore it to.

Bearer value, and why a reissue has nobody to reissue to

The sentence that governs this is one line long, and it is printed on the card. Amazon is not responsible if a GC is lost, stolen, destroyed or used without permission. Read on 26 August 2026 in the abbreviated terms published by two named incentive processors, InComm and Blackhawk Network, it sits directly beneath the issuer name, ACI Gift Cards, Inc., a Washington corporation.

That is harsher than the policies at several rivals, and the reason is structural rather than mean-spirited. A claim code identifies nobody. It carries no name, no registration and no owner, so whoever types it first has the money, and there is no second person for a reissue to restore it to. Two large chains hang a replacement on a receipt precisely because their cards are numbered objects; a code is not.

What remains is a report, made fast. The Federal Trade Commission publishes 1-888-280-4331 on its own gift card scams page as the route for this brand, tells victims to report to the company right away however long ago it happened, and asks them to keep the card and the store receipt. Its alert of 21 August 2023 describes what happens when that works: some companies flag fraudulent transactions and freeze money a scammer has not yet spent. Speed decides whether anything is left.

Company guidance published on 7 July 2025 removes the ambiguity that scripts rely on. Amazon will never ask you to purchase a gift card, and no legitimate sale or transaction requires paying with one. Payment is not taken over the phone or by email at all, and some callers rename the cards verification cards to make the demand sound procedural.

Federal law adds nothing here. Regulation E bars a fee for replacing a card, then excepts one that has been lost or stolen. Amazon.com, Inc. operates from Seattle, Washington.

Questions people ask

Will Amazon replace a lost or stolen gift card?

The printed terms say it is not responsible if a card is lost, stolen, destroyed or used without permission. No replacement route appears beside that line.

Someone redeemed my claim code

Call 1-888-280-4331 today and file at reportfraud.ftc.gov. A code is bearer value, so the first person to redeem it keeps the money.

Can the money be recovered after a scam?

Sometimes, and rarely in full. The FTC says some issuers freeze funds a scammer has not yet spent, which is why the same-day call matters.

A caller asked for a verification card

That is a renamed gift card. The company states it will never ask you to purchase one, and it does not take payment by phone or email.

Does federal law force a free replacement?

No. Regulation E bars a replacement fee in general, then excepts a card that has been lost or stolen, which is the exact case people expect it to cover.

A caller demanded a verification card

That is a renamed gift card. The same rule covers it, since the company does not take payment by phone or email at all.
