Dollar General Gift Card Lost or Stolen — No Policy

If the numbers have already left your hands
  • HelpMeLogin operates no balance checker and never will. Nothing here can freeze, cancel, trace, restore or refund a card, and nobody here recovers money.
  • Assume the money is gone, then report it anyway. No chargeback sits behind a gift card. The Federal Trade Commission still says to report the scam to the card company right away, however long ago, and to ask for the money back.
  • Report to the brand printed on the card, not to the shop that sold it. Most cards on this rack belong to other companies, and only the issuer can freeze anything.
  • Anyone offering to recover the funds for a fee is a second fraud. Reporting is free at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and no legitimate service charges to reverse a gift card.

A Dollar General gift card lost or stolen has no published route back. Nothing on the company's own gift card pages covers theft, loss or damage, and the only number it prints about gift cards sells them in bulk. The branded gift card site does publish a lost-card line, 1-833-942-7467, but that covers cards bought through that site. Money already spent by somebody else is usually gone.

The Federal Trade Commission's own page on gift card scams Where the FTC publishes what to do after paying a scammer in gift cards. HelpMeLogin is not affiliated with Dollar General or any government body, and recovers no funds.

How it works

  1. Read the logo before you pick up a phone

A card carrying another company's brand is that company's problem to fix. Calling the shop first costs the hours in which a freeze might still have worked.

  2. For a card bought on the branded site, call 1-833-942-7467

That FAQ tells cardholders to report a lost or stolen card immediately on that line, and says no replacement is provided without the card number and identifying information.

  3. For a store card, take it back to the register that sold it

With nothing published, the till holds the activation record and a manager holds whatever discretion exists. Bring the card and the receipt together.

  4. File at reportfraud.ftc.gov the same day

Filing is free and takes minutes. The FTC asks people to report a gift card scam however long ago it happened, and to ask for the money back.

  5. Refuse every recovery offer that carries a fee

Recovery scams follow gift card scams within days, quoting details of the first fraud as proof of standing. No service can reverse a gift card.

If something goes wrong

Zero balance on a card never spent

Cause
Gift card draining, before purchase
Fix
Keep the card and receipt, tell the store that day, report it to the brand on the front, and file at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

No replacement policy appears anywhere

Cause
None is published for the store card
Fix
Three of the company's own gift card pages are silent on loss and theft. The register that sold it is the only place holding a record.

877-797-2959 cannot help me

Cause
That line sells cards in bulk
Fix
It is a DG Charged sales number rather than a support line. For a card bought on the branded site, 1-833-942-7467 is the published route.

A Vanilla Visa bought here was drained

Cause
It is a general-use prepaid card from another issuer
Fix
Use the number on that card's packaging. The shop sold it and cannot freeze, replace or trace it.

Somebody offered to recover the money for a fee

Cause
A recovery scam aimed at people already defrauded
Fix
Refuse and report the approach. No service can reverse a gift card, so none can honestly charge to try.

What’s fixed, and what actually varies

Stores are company-operated rather than franchised, so no branch has its own rule. Which company issued the card decides almost everything.

Fixed

  • No replacement policy is published for the shop's own gift card
  • The only gift card number the company prints is a bulk sales line
  • The branded shop names 1-833-942-7467 for a lost or stolen card
  • That route needs the card number and identifying information
  • Gift cards carry no chargeback and no dispute window

Varies

  • Which brand issued the card, since that decides who can act
  • Whether the card was bought at a till or on the branded site
  • Whether any balance remains for an issuer to freeze
  • Whether the receipt survived, which every claim wants and no rule requires

Turn the card over and look at the PIN panel. Scratched away before you touched it means the numbers left first, which makes this a fraud report rather than a replacement request.

How Dollar General compares

Four retailers, four published answers to the worst question a gift card ever raises.

ChainPublished replacement policyWhat it turns onWhere to report the fraud
Dollar GeneralNone for its own cardNothing, since no route existsThe issuing brand, then the FTC
Family DollarNone for its own cardNothing, since no route existsThe issuing brand, then the FTC
WalmartNo on one page, reissue on anotherThe original receipt1-888-537-5503, then the FTC
TargetReissue by phone, lost or damagedThe original receipt1-800-544-2943, then the FTC

Policies are reissued without notice. Read the retailer's current terms before relying on any line here.

Both dollar chains publish nothing, and both hand their online gift card business to the same operator, which answers on the same phone number. The store card sits outside that arrangement.

Two publishers, one phone number, and a card neither covers

The company's own gift card pages were read on 26 August 2026 and none mentions loss or theft. The balance page carries a bulk sales contact, the landing page describes a selection to browse in store, and the category listing sells other brands. No replacement route exists for the card sold at a register, and the only telephone number the company publishes about gift cards, 877-797-2959, belongs to a sales team.

A policy does exist one step away, and reading it carefully matters. The branded gift card site operated by InComm Payments as The Gift Card Shop tells a cardholder to report a lost or stolen card immediately on 1-833-942-7467, warns that the card number and other identifying information will be asked for, and states that no replacement can be provided without them. That policy governs cards bought through that site. Nothing extends it to a card bought at a till.

Whose card it is decides everything else. Most plastic on this rack came from another company, so a drained Vanilla Visa is that issuer's matter and the number on its packaging reaches somebody able to act.

Federal law offers less than people expect. Regulation E, published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at section 1005.20, bars any fee for replacing a gift card or handing over the remaining balance, then ends the clause with the words unless such certificate or card has been lost or stolen. The protection shoppers assume exists is the one the rule withholds.

For fraud the Federal Trade Commission asks for something narrower than a refund: report the scam to the gift card company right away, however long ago it happened, and ask for the money back, because some companies do return it. Filing at reportfraud.ftc.gov comes next. Dollar General Corporation of Goodlettsville, Tennessee operates every store itself, so a manager's discretion is the only flexibility in the system.

Questions people ask

Does Dollar General replace a lost or stolen gift card?

No policy is published for its own card. Three of the company's gift card pages say nothing about loss, theft or damage.

What is 1-833-942-7467 for?

The branded gift card site names it for reporting a lost or stolen card bought through that site. It is not a store card line.

Will they replace it if I call?

That site's own condition is the card number plus all other requested identifying information. Without those, no replacement is provided.

A card I bought there was empty. Who do I call?

The brand printed on the front, using the number on its packaging. The shop sold it and cannot freeze or trace it.

Does federal law force a free replacement?

No. Regulation E bars a replacement fee in general, then excepts cards that have been lost or stolen — the exact case people expect it to cover.

Can the money be recovered after a scam?

Sometimes, and rarely in full. The FTC says to report it to the card company right away and ask for the money back, because some do.

Someone promised to get my money back for a fee

Refuse, and report the approach. Recovery offers are a second fraud aimed at people the first one already found.
