The odd tap out, priced exactly like the rest

Look down the soft drink rows and one name does not belong to the same supplier as the others. Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Sprite sit together; Dr Pepper does not. If any fountain flavour were going to price differently, it would be this one. None of the three published listings suggests it does.

The figures are $2.39 for a medium, $3.49 and $3.69 unsized. Those two unsized numbers are the same pair recorded against Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Sprite, to the cent, and the medium matches the medium on the only full size ladder recorded anywhere in the section. Four flavours, one rate. What sets the price is the cup being filled and the restaurant filling it.

That 54 per cent headline spread deserves a second look, because it is the sort of number that makes a section look chaotic when it is not. Against the meal, it is the wrong way round. A Whopper alone was recorded at $6.69 and as a meal at $11.19, and medium fries at $3.59, which leaves about 91 cents for the drink inside that pairing. A drink added separately to a sandwich costs at least two and a half times what the same drink costs inside a meal, in every set of listings checked.
