A generous promise, on a page that has not been fully updated
AutoZone answers this question in eleven words on its FAQ: the AutoZone Gift Card never expires and does not have any dormancy fees. Nothing conditions it. No inactivity clause, no maintenance charge and no annual review sits underneath.
Two other lines on the same page shape what that is worth. Gift cards can not be redeemed for cash, and all gift card sales are final and cannot be returned. So the value survives indefinitely and cannot leave the card except as merchandise, which is firmer than most shoppers expect from a promise sounding this friendly.
Measured against the law, the promise is real. Gift card provisions of the Credit CARD Act of 2009 sit in Regulation E at section 1005.20, published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Federal Reserve's summary of the final rule applies them to all gift cards sold on or after 22 August 2010. Funds behind a store gift card must stay valid at least five years from issue or from the last load, so a five-year expiry would have been lawful. A dormancy, inactivity, or service fee is permitted after a full year of no activity, once in any calendar month, where the amount and frequency are printed clearly on the card. AutoZone charges neither.
One caution belongs on the same page rather than in the small print. That FAQ describes purchase at over 6,300 stores, while results published by the company for the quarter ended 9 May 2026 give 6,766 in the US and 7,856 worldwide.
